Herding Training Inspired by the effective herding seminar with the Australian trainer Simon Leaning we were looking forward to the following training lessons with Felix. Nearly to the day Amina reached the age of six months. Whereas she only had become acquainted with sheep during the seminar, she now had to face those most impressive Cachena Cattle – in a training camp mostly frequented by cattle dogs! Three small training units proved the first steps to success: holding back a little in the first run, she showed herding drive in the second try, but still not really knowing how to handle all this - quite normal for a dog of this early age; showing no fear, but respect and rather caution . In her third turn she demonstarted however that she was able to implement our expectations and to meet the conditions. Man, she really put her back into this job! But now the dog’s motivation to drive cattle was much stronger than his handler’s recall, well, we’ll have to work on that part, of course. Anyway, this day showed us that herding training will stay part of our life with the dogs- at least for once a month.
